About us
Schiedmayer - established 1735
The Schiedmayer family has been manufacturing famous keyboard instruments for 290 years. Balthasar Schiedmayer built his first clavichord in 1735 in Erlangen. The tradition of making musical instruments was passed on from generation. The Schiedmayer company, established in 1809 in Stuttgart began production celestas in 1890.
The Celesta was invented in 1886 in Paris by Victor Mustel, a reed organ and piano manufacturer. Victor Mustel himself came up the name "Celesta" for his new invention and specified it in the patent.
The Celesta combines elements of a keyboard and a percussion instrument in a very specific way. Its distinct sound is generated by the following mechanical action principles:
- The felt hammer is set in motion by pressing the key - the felt hammer strikes the steel sound plate from above - the sound plate is placed above a wooden resonator.
Only this specific construction and special action can produce the typical and heavenly sound of the Celesta.
Today the Schiedmayer Celesta manufacture is located in Wendlingen near Stuttgart in southern Germany.
